Daruma is a Japanese traditional doll, created to emulate Bodhidharma (Zen Buddhism founder) which made it a talisman of good luck to the Japanese. Daruma dolls are round, hollow, and bearded. Both eyes on a new daruma are usually left blank. Daruma are regarded as a symbol of perseverance and good luck, and a good gift of encouragement. If you receive a Daruma, the idea is to set a goal or wish, then paint in Daruma's left eye. Once the desired goal is met, fill in its right eye. Papier mache.
